Pigeon Proofing Solar Panels in the Lothians

The Lothians refers to the district in the south-east of Scotland. Historically the term Lothian was used to describe a district which covered most of the south-east of Scotland. However, the modern district is slightly smaller and includes the sub-regions of West Lothian, Midlothian and East Lothian and the City of Edinburgh.

West Lothian lies to the west of the City of Edinburgh and its main town is Livingston. The district has been inhabited since the prehistoric era, though it truly grew during the industrial revolution. Evidence of it industrial past, it was the first area to ever experience an oil boom, are seen through the bings (large red mounds of industrial waste) that are found around the region. These bings have become an important symbol of industrial heritage and there are 19 of them in West Lothian including the Greendyke Bing, the Five Sisters Bing, the Faucheldean Bing and the Addiewell Bing.

Midlothian lies south of the City of Edinburgh and borders both East and West Lothian. Historically the district used to include Edinburgh, but the city has since become its own district. The largest town in Midlothian is Penicuik which was built along the River North Esk. Also along the River are the towns and villages of Auchendinny, Roslin, Polton, Lasswade, Eskbank and Dalkeith.

The River North Esk joins with the River South Esk, before it enters East Lothian and passes through the village of Inveresk and the largest town in East Lothian, Musselburgh. East Lothian is famous for its golfing with the world’s oldest golf course being found in Musselburgh and the Muirfield Golf Club, which has hosted The Open Championship a number of times, being found in Gullane. Along the coast of East Lothian, where the district meets the North Sea, lie a number of towns the largest of which are North Berwick and Dunbar. The town of Dunbar has history which dates back to possibly the Iron Age, as there appears to be the remains of an Iron Age fort near the town. More recently Dunbar has become a popular seaside resort but unfortunately it has been attracting tons of pigeons along with the people.
